New York Fashion Week Fall 2015-Winter 2016|Day 1

The forecast may call for frigid weather but there is a heated buzz in the air as the fashion cognoscenti from around the world gather in New York this week. There are so many shows in so many different locations planned for New York Fashion Week that trying to follow the official Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week calendar can be overwhelming.   Once again at Lincoln Center fur is everywhere, both on and off the runway.

A key trend that seems to be continuing from the Spring-Summer 2015 Haute Couture shows and the menswear collections before that is sartorial simplicity.  Think garments that are easy to wear while still looking chic and sophisticated.

This mood even translates into eveningwear where are seeing gowns that are surprisingly simple in concept while, of course, demanding complex engineering to create such lack of fuss.

What is really interesting, and will hopefully continue through the other fashion weeks, are the strong menswear references.  The softer streetwear nods allow for a fresh and fluid styling that is creating its own silhouette and mood. It is brilliant!

A few seasons ago color-blocking and patchwork were on the menu; today, we are dealing with a fascinating exercise that combines both, presenting a finish that suggests functional garments such as hunting jackets and workers’ gear, while elevating the luxe quotient. More on this soon… we are curious to find out if this trend has real legs.

Just two years ago the fashion world was happily high-jacked by wild colorful prints of various designs (remember the photo-print craze?). This first official day of collections  prints are coming in multiple forms, yet feel less aggressive in their message regardless of their complexity.

As we have seen in recent seasons, the effect of transparency afforded by sheer fabrics is once again popping up on the runways.   Designers are using this effect in soft, elegant ways; think highbrow over cheap thrill. We will only know the impact of this trend by week’s end.

As mentioned earlier, fur is everywhere… we are emphasizing EVERYWHERE! On and off the runway, everyone seems to be wearing fur – even the  men, who are making their statements with  strong coats and jackets. Here, again, think simplicity; though do not mistake simplicity for boring. We are experiencing an easy approach that parallels street style’s easy wearability. There’ll be more on that as the week progresses.

That chic streetwear effect is really turning out great looks, with more than a few feeling a little more French or Italian. This is good news. Americans are genius when it comes to sportswear styles.
