A 1940s inspiration was clear throughout Carolina Herrera Fall 2013. From the models’ abstracted rolled hair to squared-shoulder gowns and jackets – to PJ pants – something 40s was definitely up. As usual, the selection was beautiful and elegant – the way only Ms. Herrera can do it.
Nonetheless, lady-like does not ever have to mean meek. Carolina Herrera Fall 2013, as polite and polished as it showed, gave a variety of unexpected twists. Graphically, large abstracted dahlias and urchins referenced the 40s spirit and added a few touches of chinoiserie exoticism, ornamenting everything from gowns to dresses and pants.

The intricacy of the tailoring is always beyond compare. This time, interesting inserts and cuts were applied to jackets and the torsos of gowns. The look was sophisticated and a little more formal than in past collections. The fox-trimmed dresses reminded us of some of Ms. Herrera’s own elegant signature styles from the 80s.
Fur played a major role in this collection and came in many forms; from milk-chocolate broad-tail added to a light wool daywear ensemble, to a cranberry rinsed sable collarless jacket. The fur touches, as expected, punctuated the luxuriousness of the collection effortlessly.
