With Fashion Week upon us, you want to know what is on the runways? Well, here are several examples of what we are seeing…
One of the underlying trends for fall: the 1970s! Don’t get caught up with sartorial visualizations of The Brady Bunch or disco queens swirling around.
We’re not talking creepy polyester bell-bottom pants and bad haircuts, but more appropriately a relaxed approach to dressing – think sleek pantsuit silhouettes framed with transitional cuts for coats and a few skirts and mid-calf boots.
If you’re lost, let me explain. The 1970s transitioned late 1960s geometric cuts into a simpler silhouette and attitude… hence a proto-“Jet Set” look of sorts. Just check out Halston and his Halstonettes, they lived the look and are still influencing designers season after season… Tom Ford, perhaps? Exactly!
Don’t think the 1970s were all about sleekness; Hippy chic was prevalent too, as was asserting one’s independence and ignoring conventions.
It was also about dealing with “the man” à la Blaxploitation.
Raw[er] looking jackets and coats were ‘the thing’. This urban attitude celebrated a social change and the motto, “Do as you please!”.
And from the look of it, designers did just that.
