Michael Kors’ take on daywear is truly addictive; the luxurious approach to practical garment selection makes Kors one of New York Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week’s great hit makers. After 30 years in business, Michael Kors allows himself to indulge in what makes him happy and it shows.

With this latest collection, which was wisely broken-down into distinct garment groups for presentation, he honored the Great Plains – the Americana aesthetic of yesteryear that became an inspiration for TV households in the 1940s and 1950s with its blanket coats and love of buffalo-check prints and other “urbanite” Western style. The look can work equally well in Aspen as in New York or Chicago today.

The success of this particular line-up comes partly from his conscious effort to take the “pared-down” route,  limiting the iconic prints to black/red and black/white. Note… there were also tweed variances in grey and rust, but these read much more like neutrals in comparison. By keeping his palette focused, the collection translated as elegant and inviting, sophisticated and modern.

We know that Michael Kors loves to play with fur and this collection turned into a Powwow of imposing coats and voluminous trims in fox, Finn raccoon, and lamb shearling. To unify and harmonize more than a few ensembles, he rinsed fur in burgundy and rust to create bold, signature outerwear. Then, there were the fur accessories that complemented many looks, and infused the collection with a dose of lightness and fun.

His experimental notes came with his chunky “patchwork” furs that were excitingly new and unexpected. But Michael Kors being Michael Kors, it was his trademark “His and Hers” line-up of looks that made the collection read like a beautifully filmed biopic. The genders didn’t fight for attention, they worked as a team.
