Take Jean Paul Gaultier. What he does is really art.” –Andy Warhol

Museums have come a long way when it comes to exhibiting fashion (costume was the term formerly used). Once considered a historical after-thought within museum collections, fashion isn’t simply tolerated now, it is becoming a rightful museum component.

We are part of the animal kingdom after-all, we respond to beauty. Fashion is always around us and when something extraordinary comes along, everyone appreciates it. When topped with a dash of humor, the combination becomes delightfully accessible.

Here comes fashion phenomenon, Jean-Paul Gaultier, whose newly minted exhibition in Montréal, Canada, is an affair to remember (as odd as it may seem, there hasn’t ever been a Gaultier retrospective before!). If you can’t make it this time around, this global tour is heading to Dallas, San Francisco, Madrid (Spain) and Rotterdam (the Netherlands) next.

Jean Paul Gaultier’s work may appear difficult to label, due to his apparent silliness. This doesn’t mask anything; it actually showcases his phenomenal tailoring and draping skills – the skills that many designers only wish they possessed. Who else can design a corset and pinstriped suit combo for Madonna to dance in?

Gaultier is as famous for his creative genius as he is for his whimsical take on culture and history. This enfant terrible might be approaching his 60th birthday, but shows no signs of stopping.

Ever since showing his first collection in 1976, he has created a body of work that is as enthralling as it is magnificent. This exhibition sheds light on his complex creative mindset with about 140 haute couture and ready-to-wear creations, supported with drawings and videos.

Jean-Paul Gaultier is a living legend and The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is a worthy nod to his unique genius.
