Fasten your hats and clinch your pearls, ladies, because if you are thinking of attending next year’s Ladies’ Day at Ascot, the famed Berkshire racecourse has currently decreed and enacted a new dress code. This contemporary sartorial law–yes, that’s what it really is even though we are more accustomed to calling it a “dress code”–was flexing its new might at this past Ladies’ Day, always a highlight of the British social season.
This year’s guidelines at Ascot were a response to last year’s over-the-top fight between a few drunken blokes who had decided to brawl and swing bottles of champagne at each other within the Royal enclosure, a short distance from, and in full sight of, the Queen. The organizers laid down the law, deciding that the Berkshire racecourse event needed to regain some of its past glory and elegance. So, it was decided that a total sartorial reboot should do the trick.
No need to call the FCC…“No more Riff-Raff allowed,” as they say. Ladies and gents are, from now on, to attend with sartorial decorum–presently, ladies will be issued with strict instructions on skirt length, width of dress straps, and hat placements, while men will be required to wear a shirt and tie with jacket. If you don’t know exactly what constitutes proper attire, check out the Ascot website or read the detailed list below, which gives you the Full-Monty on the restrictions.
Because around 300,000 people usually flock to Berkshire for the annual Royal Ascot horseracing event, the looks are going to be as varied as they are colorful. Let’s not forget that the English credit themselves as eccentrics, we know that they regal in pushing the envelop of conventionality to the limit. And thankfully for us, they did and didn’t disappoint. To prevent any “malfunctions,” a team of dress code assistants are on hand to give out fascinators, pashmina-style shawls and ties to those not quite coming-up to scratch.
Remember that before BRAVO created the Real Housewives series, the UK had its own TV shows based on the sartorial woes and misbehavings of soccer players and their equally entertaining wives. These gals still give Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez a run for their money. Let’s see what they will turn-up in next year!
