Now that the dust has settled from the arty effervescent cloud of the 4 Fashion Weeks, we can clearly start defining strong global trends that are surely going to be sticking around for at least a year or two. If color is the “IT” global trend par excellence, furs and leathers are the close runner-up. Fur in all its glory [and myriads of variations] is flirting and engaging with everything that fashion can put its creative finger on.

Among the many fur types, one that showed some of the most exciting and creative adaptations is the furry side of cow skin (leather), also known as “pony skin.”

Not to be left out in the dust, footwear is showing a strong sensibility toward fur too, sometimes using fur elements as a trim (more on that in a future article) or, as seen for fall 2012, as a primary component in shoe design.   And the importance of footwear in a woman’s wardrobe cannot be overstated.  As this newly released documentary shows, women’s love affair with shoes is a serious obsession.

There is something about the luster of “pony”/cow fur. It reflects light so elegantly, takes on color so perfectly and looks beyond amazing when paired with polished leather, creating a beautiful juxtaposition.

As you can see, many designers decided to incorporate this timeless material, creating truly extraordinary footwear for fall 2012. It goes without saying that this is a trend to be remembered, and from the looks of it, ”pony” skin will be popular in other aspects of accessory design too.
